I haven't forgotten about you, Kate. My usual contact has yet to get back to me. I'm trying my local Philly contact to see if she can point me in the right direction for you. Keep you posted. In the meantime, you should check out chubb.com and you can do a search for positions that may be open. - Jess

Wow, that's a change!! Unfortunately, a lot of companies have done away with underwriting training. If you work for one of those companies, they'll probably start you off as an underwriting assistant. BUT, if you can get into an underwriting training program (AIG, Chubb), you'll be making out well! I went through Chubb's training 8 years ago and they started me off at a nice salary. With your prior experience on the agency side, you can definitely negotiate a nice starting salary, for certain. Word of caution: I am not sure about your educational background, but Chubb & AIG both require a 4 year degree (doesn't matter in what). Good Luck! I have a friend in the Chubb office in Austin that may be able to help you out if you do decide to go that route. - J

Kate - be sure to keep your horizons broadly open. There are STAFF positions in this business that should welcome an agency professional who can actually do analytics! Best wishes. Wish I was in TX instead of New England!

Kate...if you haven't had prior u/w experience, you'll probably have to start as a u/w assistant...I don't know any companies in Austin hiring, but then I work in the E&S world for the most part. I do know there are more companies with u/w offices in Dallas or Houston than out of Austin. If you definitely want to go to the company side you might try that.

If you want to go to an MGA, there are MGA's all over. Again, you'll probably have to start as an U/W assistant or a renewal underwriter or Assistant Broker unless you've had prior U/W experience. Do you have a specialty? If you want to send me your resume I would be happy to pass it on to my HR person -- our office is in San Antonio. Or pass it around to some of my agents if you want to stay on the agency side. You might also contact the local associations in the area.

Wisconsin in the winter, or Houston in the summer? Which do you prefer? I don't think there would be many Hawaiian shirt Fridays in WI in February.
